Test Name

Carbapenemase-producing Organism Culture

Test Code

CPOCX

Methodology

Biochemicals, Conventional PCR, Culture, MALDI-TOF (matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight) mass spectrometry, Real-time PCR

Overview/Supplementary

This test detects KPC, NDM, VIM, IMP, OXA-23, OXA-24, OXA-48, and OXA-58 gene sequences associated with carbapenem-resistant organisms (CRO).

CRO testing is used as an aid in infection control in the detection of CRO that colonize patients in health care settings and is not intended to guide or monitor treatment for CRO bacterial infections.

Turn Around Time

3-7 days

Specimen Requirements

Specimens: Rectal source (Copan dual swab collection kit or equivalent), Wound or skin axilla and groin composite source (Eswab), Sputum, Stool.

Special Considerations

If submitting specimens for a point prevalence survey, notify MDH-PHL via email arlnmn@state.mn.us.

Fill out ARLAB Central Region Clinical Testing and Submission form https://www.health.state.mn.us/diseases/idlab/arln.html.

Transport/Stability

Store and ship at ambient (8°C to 25°C) or refrigerated (2°C to 8°C) temperature.

If Carbapenemase PCR, CarbaR - Specimen testing is also ordered on the same rectal swab, store and ship at ambient (15°C to 28°C) temperature within 5 days of collection.
