Overview/Supplementary

This test detects blood parasites (e.g., Babesia, microfilariae, Plasmodium, trypanosomes). Parasitemia will be reported, as appropriate. Plasmodium PCR - Blood will be performed if Plasmodium sp. is suspected.

Specimen Requirements

Specimens: Thick and thin blood film smears from whole blood, EDTA whole blood 

Preferred volume: 1 mL
Minimum volume: 200 µL

Special Considerations

Do not allow EDTA tube to sit for prolonged time with cap off at room temperature.

Parasite and red blood cell morphology can become distorted.

Transport/Stability

Store and ship at ambient (8°C to 25°C) or refrigerated (2°C to 8°C) temperature.
