Overview/Supplementary

This test detects enterovirus D68 RNA. This test does not detect any other non-Enterovirus-D68 RNA in samples. Samples negative for EV-D68 on this assay will be reflexed to our Rhinovirus/Enterovirus Multiplex PCR to screen for other enteroviruses.

Specimen Requirements

BAL, Dual NP/OP swab, Nasal aspirate, Nasal swab, Nasal wash, Nasopharyngeal swab, Oropharyngeal swab, Sputum, Tracheal aspirate, or Vesicular fluid/skin lesion swabs

Specimens in sterile container: Cerebrospinal fluid/CSF, Dry swabs of vesicular fluid/skin lesions, Skin lesions or scabs, or Stool (raw or in Cary-Blair)

Isolates: Viral culture isolates

Preferred volume: 3 mL

Minimum volume: 200 µL

Special Considerations

EV-D68 PCR should only be selected if patient symptoms fit clinical guidelines for Acute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM). Non-AFM cases should be submitted for the RVEVPCR.

Transport/Stability

Store and ship at refrigeration (2°C to 8°C) temperature within 14 days of collection. Alternatively, ship frozen (≤0°C). Store and ship dry samples at ambient (8°C to 25°C) temperature.
