Overview/Supplementary
This test detects Plasmodium spp. and speciates P. falciparium, P. malariae, P. ovale, and P. vivax. A blood parasite smear, Giemsa stain, will also be performed.

Specimen Requirements
Specimens: EDTA whole blood, Thick and thin blood film smears from whole blood
Preferred volume: 1 mL
Minimum volume: 200 µL
Special Considerations
Do not allow EDTA tube to sit for prolonged time with cap off at room temperature. Parasite and red blood cell morphology can become distorted.
Transport/Stability
Store and ship at ambient (8°C to 25°C) or refrigeration (2°C to 8°C) temperature.
