Methodology

Specimens are referred to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, GA for testing.

Overview/Supplementary

This test identifies Streptococcus spp. from clinical specimens that were positive for S. pneumoniae, S. pyogenes (GAS), or S. agalactiae (GBS) from blood and urine specimens positive for Streptococcus pneumoniae by urinary antigen testing. Testing is performed for surveillance purposes.

Specimen Requirements

Specimens: 

Blood (whole blood from blood culture bottle)
Preferred volume: 10 mL
Minimum volume: 2 mL

Cerebrospinal fluid/CSF
Preferred volume: 2 mL
Minimum volume: 0.2 mL

Urine
Minimum volume: 2 mL

For surveillance use only. Results not reported back to submitter.
