This test detects non-variola orthopoxvirus (mpox) in clinical specimens.
Submission should include information about whether specimen is associated with the 2022-23 mpox outbreak. If not, please order the Variola Virus and Orthopoxvirus Rule-out (LRNPOXRO). Positive samples may be sent to CDC for additional testing.

Specimens: Dry swab of lesion. Lesion crusts or scabs are acceptable, but not recommended, and must be submitted with a swab from the same lesion.
Collect samples from more than one lesion, preferably from different locations on the body and/or from lesions with differing appearances.
Specimen collection:
Collect two swabs from each lesion. Vigorously swab or brush lesion with two separate sterile dry nylon, polyester, or Dacron swabs. Either break off the applicator end of both swabs into the same 1.5mL or 2mL screw-capped tube with an O-ring (preferred) or place two swabs from one lesion into one sterile container. Use separate sterile containers for each set of same lesion swabs.
Refrigerate within 1 hour of collection.
No cotton swabs or swabs received in transport media will be accepted.
This organism is reportable and submission of clinical materials is required by the MN Reportable Disease Rule 4605.7000 - 4605.7900 (https://www.health.state.mn.us/diseases/reportable/rule/index.html).
Ship at refrigeration (2°C to 8°C) temperature. Specimens must received be within 7 days of collection.
